A Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officer who commanded a military raid at Makerere University during a students’ protest against 15 per cent fees increment has been arrested.

UPDF spokesperson, Brig Richard Karemire, said on Friday that Capt Ronald Lubeera is currently detained at Makindye military barracks.

Brig Karemire added that a board of inquiry led by Lt Col Richard Ochen Okum has been set up to establish details of what happened and findings will guide the next course of action against Capt Lubeera.

His arrest comes just days after President Museveni ordered for the withdrawal of military police from Makerere University premises. Mr Museveni on Tuesday said only the Uganda Police Force should maintain law and order at Uganda’s oldest public university.

This followed reports of military and riot police clobbering students after breaking into their halls of residence at night.
