United States Embassy condemns brutality against Makerere University students

The United States Mission in Kampala has raised concern over the violence against Makerere University students as they held peaceful demonstrations against the 15% cumulative tuition increment policy. The diplomats describe the events, especially the night raid of Lumumba hall by police and soldiers as very disturbing. This incident shocked the nation, as students including those with disabilities were indiscriminately beaten and property worth millions of shillings destroyed. This prompted a section of members of parliament to call for the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor.

As previously mentioned by other stakeholders, the United States Embassy also described the highhandedness of security officials and lengthy student arrests as uncalled for and a violation of basic human rights. It remains to be seen how the university will respond to the situation, and whether there will be a return to normalcy soon. The message can be found in the links below.
