UCU guild president ordered to reinstate electoral commission

The Mukono based Uganda Christian University has dominated the news this week with various uncertainties about affairs at the institution.

The University Guild President recently fired the Electoral Commission chairman and suspended all members of the commission over suspicions of misappropriation of funds.

The decision of the Guild President had been supported by Guild Parliament which in the end had an impact on the election process since was put on hold.

However, after having a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi, the office of the Vice-Chancellor has put out a few clarifications on what’s transpiring.

In his letter, the VC decided that the election date be extended till 25th November to allow the EC carry on more civic education on how voting will be done but also give the candidates more time to campaign. He further ordered the Guild President to reinstate the Electoral Commission.

He stated that the DVC Accounts will work with the Accounts office, the DOSA alongside the Guild Government to ascertain how the funds had been spent.

However, it’s now not clear whether the Guild President Mr. Timothy Kadaga will reinstall Mr. John Bruce as the Electoral Commission chairman or whether he will make a new appointment instead.
