SAD: Lecturer killed during Bobi Wine’s protests

A retired lecturer at the Uganda Management Institute (UMI) and senior accountant was Wednesday shot dead while walking from Mabirizi city complex during the riots in the city centre.

John Kitobe, 72, a resident of Naalya Housing Estate was one of the many yet unidentified victims of the Wednesday riots following the arrest of NUP Presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi while addressing a rally at Luuka district headquarters.

A family member confirmed that Kitobe was shot at Mabirizi complex. He said the police picked his body and took it to the city mortuary and a police officer picked his phone from his pocket and dialled several numbers.

He said he informed relatives who rushed to the mortuary and confirmed his identity.

According to the deceased’s family, Kitobe has been spending most of his retirement time at his country home at Mushanga, ┬áin Sheema municipality, Sheema district. He has been, however, coming to Kampala to check on his wife Loyce Kitobe and children.

Reports indicate that he was shot and died instantly as he walked down the stairs to reach out to his car. He was putting on a white -shirt and a Good Samaritan covered his face with a blue cap.

Kitobe will be buried on Saturday at Mushanga. He was an accountant at the Uganda Tea company, a financial controller at the Uganda Red Cross, and a lecturer at UMI before he retired.
