Prof. Nawangwe officially welcomes Makerere’s new Imam

The vice-chancellor of Makerere University Prof. Barnabas Nawanwgwe yesterday officially welcomed the new Imam of Makerere university Mosque Sheikh Sowedi Juma Mayanja.

The official welcome meeting was held in his office and was also attended by the outgoing Imam Ssentongo, and the Ag. Imam Prof Abasi Kiyimba.

Dr. Sowed Juma Mayanja is a distinguished scholar in Sharia Law and was appointed following the retirement of the previous Imam who had come of age.

Dr. Sowed Juma Mayanja has a Bachelor’s, Masters, and Doctorate in Sharia Islamic Law. In addition, he has a diploma in Law from the Law Development Centre.

The University Mosque was built and completed in 1948 from funds subscribed partly by Makerere College and partly by the Government of Zanzibar.
