People Power president Bobi Wine joins campaign seeking justice for Makerere student killed by LDUs

The President of the People Power movement Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine has joined several Ugandans seeking justice for Emmanuel Tegu, a student at Makerere University who passed away after a week in hospital, following a beating reportedly at the hands of Local Defense Unit (LDU) officers.

Makerere University students, together with numerous members of the public started the campaign seeking to bring those behind the young men’s death to book.

A police report released on Saturday afternoon indicated that Emmanuel, a student in the third year of a Bachelor of Animal Production, was beaten by a mob on Sunday 28th June after they suspected that he was a thief.

However, under the JusticeforTegu hashtag on social media, Bobi Wine along with others have dismissed the police report and instead pinned LDU officers for having brutally beaten Emmanuel who succumbed to multiple organ failure at Mulago hospital.

The coronavirus has not killed a single Ugandan, yet the government has killed so many people, tortured Ugandans and mutilated others in the name of enforcing COVID related restrictions!

Vincent Serungi, a resident of Wakiso town was shot and killed on March 31st.

Margaret Nanyunga, an 80 year old woman was murdered when LDUs raided her home on 1st April, in Kyengera. Wilber Kawono, a boda boda rider was shot dead by policemen in Budaka district on April 18th.

In Jinja, Evelyn Namulondo was shot dead by the LDU and Charles Sanga, a businessman died after he was violently attacked by soldiers and police officers on the orders of the RDC.

On May 10th, Alfred Mwanga a 46 year old resident of Kapkwata village in Kween district was shot dead by LDU, ostensibly enforcing the curfew!

On May 13th, Eric Mutasiga, a primary school headteacher in Mukono was shot by the LDUs as he pleaded with them not to shoot a chapatti seller. He later succumbed to his injuries.

In Kasese, Benon Nsimenta a lay reader and father of eight was shot dead by a soldier on June 24th. In Oyam, the LDUs beat up a 65 year old man and killed him last week.

The list is endless and the list of those who are nursing gunshot wounds is even longer. And now, as we all struggle to get to terms with Hussein Walugembe’s miserable death, reports come in indicating that Emmanuel Tegu, a third year veterinary student at Makerere was beaten to death by LDU.

This is as troubling as it is provocative. How many mothers, fathers, children and siblings must cry and wail before this blood bath comes to an end? This cannot and MUST NOT GO ON. We pay these people to protect us and not to kill us.

Each one of us is a potential victim. And yet, the solution too, is in our hands. Friends, it is our duty to stop this madness- we must never expect the same people who created this mess to clean it up!
