Opposition MPs are set to formally challenge the Nationally Resistance Movement Caucus’ resolution to endorse the contentious Makerere University 15 percent tuition increment that caused a two weeks standoff at the university.

The Shadow Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Mathias Mpuuga, who also serves as the MP of Masaka Municipality, stated that the decision was premature and minimized the sovereignty of parliament. These words were also reechoed by the speaker of parliament.

It is demeaning to Parliament for a party caucus to purport to resolve on a matter that is under Parliamentary scrutiny. Some members of the caucus are committed committee members who are
being stampeded to endorse a position under their mandate on behalf of Parliament

Hon. Mathias Mpuuga

The Parliamentary committee on education and sports is investigating the recent events at Makerere University and is set to deliver a report soon. The NRM Caucus met at State House on Monday and endorsed the 15% tuition increment at Makerere University.
