OPINION: Talking UCU Guild Presidential campaigns
The road to the change of leadership in the Mukono based University has already kicked off.
Unlike other institutions, Uganda Christian University holds their guild elections in their first semester commonly known as the Advent semester.
These campaigns kicked off the recent week on 16/10/2019 after the results of the vetting process were out.
Just like the previous years, the University separated itself from political parties and the chaos related to them. The contestants are required to use reasonable colours within the University colours and slogans. The major campaigning system adopted is visiting different lecture rooms as they present their ideas to the fellow students (voters).
The contention for the biggest office is at the exposure of only two aspirants; Mr. Timothy Kadaga who is a 2nd Year Law student and Mr.Erisa Nyakahuma also a 2nd Year student of Economics and Management.
Mr. Kadaga holds his slogan as “unity in diversity” while Mr. Erisa sticks to his “solutions rather than answers” and the dual have their posters around all corners in the Mukono bsed campus.
A few incidences of bad politicking have been spotted though no that alarming and as well other contestants take on campaigning seriously in their different positions.
The program of this journey as timetabled appears as; Tuesday 29th October, there will be a Presidential Debate in Nkoyoyo Hall, Wednesday 30th October there will be a televised Presidential Debate on Urban TV, Thursday 31st October Open Air Campaigns in the university’s New Pitch and Closure of campaigns will take centre stage while Friday 1st November will be the Voting Day.
However it should be remembered that the university has taken long without having a Guild president from the Faculty of Law for which reasons ain’t clear. But now the above legacy will be put once again to a test.
