Makerere’s strike machine David Musiri asks Roy Ssemboga to step down from MP race

David Musiri, a Makerere University student who rose to fame for fiercely protesting against the 15% tuition increment has urged former Makerere Guild president Dr Roy Ssemboga to step down from the Kawempe South Parliamentary race.

The remarks come after Roy decided to run as an independent candidate after the National Unity Platform awarded the party ticket to journalist Kazibwe Bashir.

Below is the full statement from Musiri David.

Dear brother in the struggle,

I relay my warm greetings and hope all is soldiering well out there.

I voraciously read your post-vetting note where you overtly declared a bounce back as an independent candidate for the Kawempe North seat. Whereas it is your constitutional right to do so, allow me to remind you that you subscribe to the NUP party which has rules you’re meant to adhere to.

I want to remind you about your glorious days as the institution’s coordinator of the People Power movement when you were scouting for potential guild presidents across the country.

I happened to have been one of those that had interests in the People Power flag during the 2018/19 85th guild elections having been a sworn member of the movement.

In my one on one dialogue with you when the principal delegated you to meet me, I vividly remember you luring me out of the race as you argued that I lacked substantial grounds to be the 85th guild president.

You chose a better candidate in my young brother, Julius Kateregga and he brought victory to the movement. I congratulated him for the good of the struggle and life moved on. It is the same spirit I’d like you to apply to Kawempe South where the NUP is fronting a much better candidate, Kazibwe Bashir Mbaziira. Just like you urged me to concede, I summon you to do the same.

Be the exemplary leader we’ve all looked to. Let’s not give our nemesis space to win. We should set our eyes on the major ball. The struggle for liberation has a sacrifice. We were perhaps dropped for the good of the struggle. Count yourself a sacrifice and stand on the right side of history just like I’ve done in Makindye West. I will be truly grateful if my humble appeal triggers another thought in you, my brother.

Yours Truly,
