Makerere University student secures 2020 Wege Prize

Paula Tusiime, a student at Makerere University has won the Global Wege Prize 2020, securing $15,000 (55 million) in the process.

Wege Prize is an annual competition that ignites game-changing solutions for the future by inspiring college/university students around the world to collaborate across institutional, disciplinary, and cultural boundaries to redesign the way economies work.

Paula won with her Hya Bioplastics project which she collaborated alongside students from Georgia Institute of Technology in the United States.

Hya Bioplastics is developing a process that blends dried water hyacinth fibers and boiled cassava starch into a biodegradable raw material for the production of disposable plates, cups, silverware, and packaging. At the same time, the process helps mitigate the threats posed by the spread of water hyacinth.

Congratulations!
