Makerere University Joint Staff Association has come out to strongly condemn the manner in which the university has handled the demonstrations over the 15% cumulative tuition increment that started with a peaceful demonstration by female students on Tuesday 22nd October. It has now escalated into violence, breaking into rooms and arrests of students.

In a letter addressed to the Makerere University Council, they further called upon the university to end the brutality, intimidations, threats, and suspensions that they claim are only meant to subdue students and staff into submission. They called upon the administration to instead engage students and other stakeholders to find long-lasting solutions to their concerns as opposed to violence.

The Joint Staff Association is made up of members from the Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA), Makerere University Administrative Staff Association (MASA), and the National Union of Educational Institutions (NUEI).
