Makerere University Guild cabinet to lead strike over fees surcharges

Makerere University ranked 5th best in Africa

Makerere University Guild speaker Ezra Byabutangazi has threatened to mobilize student leaders and students for a protest on Tuesday if the university does not address concerns over fines, also known as surcharges, that are deemed unfair.

Makerere University’s new tuition policy faced strong resistance from the start mainly because of the annual 15% increment in tuition and a raise in functional fees. Current first year students pay functional fees of about shs. 800,000 compared to students in third and fourth year that pay around shs. 500,000

In addition, the policy comes with penalties that have angered students and have prompted the students guild to take action. Some of these penalties include a shs. 50,000 fine for delayed registration as well as interest charged on tuition balance beyond 1st November.

The policy further grants the university the right to vary fees chargeable anytime with or without notice. We shall keep you informed about any further developments.

We shall keep you posted.
