Makerere University Deputy Vice-Chancellor candidates to make presentations today
Three professors, who were shortlisted to compete for the job of the Makerere University deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Finance and Administration (DVCF&A), will today make public presentations to demonstrate why they are the suitable candidates for the job.
The candidates are; Prof. Anthony Mugisha, Associate Professor Allan Mulengani Katwalo, and Professor William Bazeyo who is serving the same position in an acting capacity.
Prof. Bazeyo who most recently held the position had his appointment challenged by Prof. Mugisha arguing that the search process unfairly and unlawfully denied him a chance to compete for the job.
In April 2019, the High Court quashed Bazeyo’s appointment on grounds that he was recruited irregularly but Professor Ezra Suruma, the Chancellor of Makerere University appointed him in acting capacity.
The court said the university’s Search Committee violated its mandate as set out in terms of reference when they forwarded only his name to the university Senate for onward submission to the University Council for approval.
Bazeyo has held the office still in acting capacity following the elevation of Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe to the university’s top job in 2017.
The three are slated to present before the public in the Main Hall and they are supposed to give reasons as to why they should be given the top position.
The search committee is slated to forward three names to the Senate and to the University Council with their scores from the interviews, public presentation, and their qualifications and the Council will select one candidate with the highest marks.
