MAK Student who drowned in swimming pool was a popular Rwandese
Uwimpuhwe James, a second year Bachelor of Arts in Arts student that tragically drowned in the Makerere University pool was a darling to many. He hails from Rubavu in Rwanda and previously studied at Kigooma Secondary School.
He joined Makerere University to pursue higher education at the ‘Harvard of Africa’ and quickly rose to fame, which earned him a position as sports minister of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. He stayed close to his roots and was an active member of the Banyawanda students association of Makerere University. Not much is known about his close family but sources indicate that he has no relatives in Uganda, with his family based in neighbouring Rwanda.
He was a friendly gentleman and always made time for conversation with friends and at least offered a smile or firm handshake if he was in a hurry. Furthermore, he was a sportsman, active in games union activities and was spotted with friends at the recent Mak RUN 2019. It is very saddening that students continue to die at the university pool with a case reported annually in recent years. The death of this International student has shaken the university.
