On 7th December 2020, the cabinet of the Republic of Uganda held a meeting at State House, Entebbe where Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) was approved to be taken over as a public university.
During this meeting, the Ministry of Finance, planning and economic development was tasked to provide the required funds to operationalise MMU starting with the financial year (FY) 2021/2022.
The Minister of Education and Sports was as well authorised to proceed to the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, for the drafting of the statutory instrument for the takeover of MMU.
Dr Kagambe Edmond, the secretary of the Transition Taskforce expressed gratitude to various stakeholders for their foresightedness and diligence to deliver their mandate in the transition process.
“Congratulations to all stakeholders! What a remarkable accomplishment! Just completing this particular marathon would have been something to brag about, but to win it, well done! We thank the chairperson of University Council and the Chancellor for all the support rendered in the whole process,” he remarked.
MMU will become the 9th public university in Uganda and the second to metamorphose from private to public after Kabale University which turned public in 2016.
MMU is located Northwest of Fort Portal, Kabarole District, in Western Uganda, approximately 320 km by road, west of Kampala, Uganda’s capital city.
It was named after the Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the Mountains of the Moon.
